Field Trip Recap

Field Trips (1)

Our students love connecting with our greater Washington, DC metro area! Through a partnership with Tickets for Kids Charities, our students, families, and staff made meaningful memories together at local museums and spirited sports games. As students with disabilities, 80% of whom also live in low-income households, our kids have fewer opportunities to travel and connect with the community. Field trips are a great way to broaden our students’ worldviews and inspire them to dream big.

Museums
Traveling across the river into Virginia, students from The Foundation School of Montgomery County had an enriching experience at the Alexandria Black History Museum. Did you know that students with disabilities learn better through hands-on, interactive activities? Our museum visit was a great opportunity to learn more about our local history and connect the museum’s exhibits to what students learned in the classroom. Meanwhile, the International Spy Museum welcomed 31 of our students with emotional disabilities and autism for a day of immersive fun! Students had a blast collecting information from the exhibits to crack ciphers and solve puzzles throughout the museum. The field trip was also a great opportunity for students to practice their social-emotional learning skills, like navigating new travel experiences and practicing frustration tolerance.

Many of our students have goals focused on strategic or spontaneous thinking, reading comprehension, and problem-solving. All our students have social and emotional goals that focus on having positive interactions with peers and adults. Our visit was an opportunity for students to interact with their peers and the general public, as well as build life skills.” -The Foundation Learning Center teacher

Sports
The Foundation Schools is also excited to give our families the opportunity to make memories with their children. This summer, our students with autism from The Foundation Learning Center visited Audi Field and Nationals Park with their families! Accompanied by staff, students practiced life skills including ordering pizza, sitting in a large group surrounded by clapping and chanting, and cleaning up after themselves.
